Cheese Crusted Flying Dutchman

Ingredients

Burger

  • 2 large yellow onion slices
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 beef patties or tuna patties
  • 2 slices American cheese
  • 2 slices mozzarella cheese

Homemade In-N-Out sauce

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Whisk together all of the spread ingredients until smooth. Set aside.
  2. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook the tuna patties according to package instructions, or smash and cook the beef patties until browned. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Add the onion slices to the pan. Season lightly with salt and pepper, then cook until softened and caramelized. Cover the pan for a few minutes to help them cook faster.
  4. Top each patty with a slice of American cheese and cover until melted.
  5. In the same pan, place the mozzarella slices and let them cook until the bottoms are golden and crispy. Carefully place a caramelized onion slice on top of each mozzarella slice, then flip so the crispy cheese wraps around the onion.
  6. Assemble the burger by placing one cheese-crusted onion on the bottom, spreading on a generous layer of the homemade In-N-Out spread, then stacking the two patties. Add another layer of spread and finish with the second cheese-crusted onion on top.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy!
